Had an amazing sleep, the beds were unbelievably comfortable. Crissi was feeling much better, so we headed off for breakfast- and what a breakfast it was! pancakes, cinnamon apples, maple syrup, eggs, bacon, biscuits, bagels etc, etc! The weather forecast said it was minus 19F and it sure was cold outside! We bundled up wearing lots of layers.
We were staying about a mile from the Grand Canyon, so it didn't take us long to get there. words can't describe the Grand Canyon, it was a palette of changing hues, colours and views.
Being so cold, there were hardly any other people there, many carparks were empty, and it was easy walking. We wandered along the path, popping into gift shops to warm up. I was keen to see a squirrel, but due to the cold weather they were all in hiding! Luckily one of the gift shops had some toy ones! We did see a couple of chipmunks playing chase in the trees, and on our drive several mule deer who stopped for photos ( and so did Janice so Kathy could leap out of the car for a photo!)
We drove along the rim, stopping at different lookouts, or over looks as they are called here. Janice was just amazed that she could just pull into all the stops and take photos easily-no traffic. The views were just breathtaking, and the photos don't capture what we saw. The last place we stopped at was called Hermits Rest, it was an original building that used to be a stopping point for travellers hiking through the canyon. It had a huge fireplace( see photo), before heading back home. The day just sped by, so much to look at and take in. There was a serenity and peacefulness about the day.
The trip back was about three and half hours, great driving Janice.
Thank you Crissi and Janice, today was magical.
